This cache is located within the Msinsi reserve of Shongweni. It is on the far side of the dam, located in an area most dont know exists. The Aqueduct system that was build in the 1920's was to supply water from the dam to greater Durban area.
Please exercise extreme caution when locating this cache!!! Do not attempt this cache alone or if you unhappy with heights!
You will need to enter the Shongweni reserve to find this cache. There are 3 ways to the location of this cache depending on your sense of adventure...
The one way is to go across the dam by boat and then walk a short distance along a footpath to the old overflow spill way that lead to the aqueduct, this method may be favourable to those already out on the water looking for the other cache in the cliff faces not too far away as the crow flies...
Method number two which is also linked to finding another cache, is to find the opening of the aqueduct tunnel that traverses under the dam, below the dam wall. This tunnel entrance is located somewhere in the dense bush opposite the old water works buildings in the side of the cliff. For this option, you will require a head torch with a good life as you will need to walk through approximately 900m of aqueduct tunnel before coming out on the opposite side of the dam. Again - exercise caution for this option as there is water in this tunnel and it is slippery!
The third option and the less strenous one would be to make your away around the contour roads that cirlce the dam - they are not open to vehicles so it is recommended that this route be taken by mountain bike rather than by foot, but it can be walked via some of the hiking paths that eventually lead up to the road again.
Be sure to take in the wildlife on whichever option you choose and to make a day of it at the dam...
An entry fee is required into the reserve per person and a commnity levy per vehicle.
