Chamam-se rochas metamórficas àquelas que são formadas por transformações físicas e/ou químicas sofridas por outras rochas, quando submetidas ao calor e à pressão do interior da Terra, num processo denominado metamorfismo.
Devido a este processo e em ambientes propícios, os minerais podem tornar-se instáveis e reagir, formando outros minerais estáveis podendo ocorrer a transformação em outras rochas muito diferentes. Um destes exemplares é o xisto

Xisto é o nome genérico de vários tipos de rochas metamórficas facilmente identificáveis por serem fortemente laminadas. Em Portugal é também conhecida por "lousa".
Tal como a maioria das rochas metamórficas, o xisto apresenta aspecto nitidamente cristalino, e devido às fortíssimas pressões a que a rocha é sujeita tem foliação nítida.
Foliação é a orientação preferencial de minerais no meio rochoso que se manifesta pela facilidade dessas rochas se fracturarem segundo planos mais ou menos paralelos.
Quando submetido a altas temperaturas, o Xisto, no caso do betuminoso (xisto argiloso) é uma fonte de combustível, produzindo um óleo de composição semelhante ao do petróleo do qual se extrai nafta, óleo combustível, gás liquefeito, óleo diesel e gasolina.

Shale is the generic name of various types of metamorphic easily identifiable to be strongly laminated. Portugal is also known as "slate".
Like most of the metamorphic rocks, shale presents an aspect distinctly crystalline and because of the very strong pressures to which the rock is subject foliation is clear.
Foliation is the preferred orientation of minerals in the rock middle which manifests itself by the ease of the rock being divided according to the plans more or less parallel.
When subjected to high temperatures, the bituminous shale is a fuel source, producing an oil composition similar to petroleum which is extracted naphtha, fuel oil, liquefied gas, diesel and gasoline.
