Geocache Description:

Photobucket

Here you will find a plaque containing a poem. This poem was inspired by the tragic loss of the side-wheeler The Erie, that burned August 9th, 1841, at 8:10 p.m. near Silver Creek. In the poem all are saved with the exception of helmsman John Maynard, who is credited with great bravery and self sacrifice in giving his own life to save those of the others. In the real fire many of the nearly 200 aboard, mostly Swiss and German immigrants, lost their lives.
