in our disclaimer.
The Summer Olympics begin on July 27, 2012, in London, England. In their honor, we have created a series of caches to highlight the Olympic sporting disciplines. We will release a new cache as the first medal is awarded in each discipline. In each cache, you will see a code for the Closing Ceremony cache. The first 26 cachers who log all 26 sporting, Opening, and Closing Ceremony caches will win a special Olympic prize.
Wrestling is one of the world's oldest sports, with documented competitions going back as far as 708 B.C. Greco-Roman wrestling was included in the first modern Olympics and has remained a sport throughout Olympic history. Freestyle wrestling was introduced in the 1904 Games, and women's freestyle events were added in Athens at the 2004 Olympics.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, competitors may use only their upper bodies and arms to throw or pin their opponent. The ultimate goal is to pin the back of your opponent's shoulders to the mat. Points are awarded based on the throws and holds used by the athletes. The match is divided into 3 periods of two minutes each, with a short (30 second) break between periods. A period is won by performing a special "grand amplitude" hold (worth 5 points), scoring 2 holds worth three points each, or by scoring 6 more points than your opponent. A match is won by winning 2 periods or by pinning your opponent. There can be penalty points assessed if wrestlers leave the mat, perform illegal holds, or do other illegal actions (such as biting or scratching...yikes!).
In Freestyle wrestling, participants may use any part of their body to throw, hold or pin their opponent. Scoring rules are otherwise similar to Greco-Roman wrestling, although in the third period, if there is not a winner after 2 minutes, the match enters a "golden score period" where the first to score wins the period and the match. Women's Freestyle follows the same rules as men's but some moves are prohibited (such as the double headlock).
Wrestlers are divided into weight classes and wrestle in a single elimination tournament to determine the champion. Any wrestlers who lose to one of the finalists (at any point in the competition) enter the repechage. The wrestlers in repechage then wrestle each other in another elimination round. The winner of the repechage claims the bronze medal. In these Olympics, there will be 344 competitors (266 men, 72 women, 6 TBD). Each country may enter only one wrestler in each event. There are 7 Greco-Roman weight classes, 7 men's Freestyle classes, and 4 women's Freestyle classes.
****CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT ABOVE COORDINATES****
To find this cache you must proceed to the above listed coordinates. When there, you will see a 4 digit address. You must take the first 2 digits and add them to N 42o 54.937 to get the correct North coordinates. You must also take the first 2 digits and subtract them from W 085o 44.264 to get the correct West coordinates.
Why this location?
It is to honor Dan "No Points" Gable. As a collegiate wrestler, he only lost 1 match (coincidentally it was his last...). His Iowa State collegiate record was 181-1 and included 2 NCAA titles. He was also a very successful U.S. Olympic wrestler, winning Olympic gold in his Freestyle weight class. During the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, he did not allow any of his competitors to score even 1 point on him. An amazing accomplishment!!! He went on to become the head coach of wrestling at the University of Iowa and led his teams to a record of 355-21-5, including 16 NCAA titles and 21 straight Big Ten wrestling titles.
Hidden in the above paragraph is information to let you know you reached the correct starting location and the address needed. Any persons you encounter at this spot will have no idea why you might be there, so no need to park and ask them for help. We doubt they have any connection to Dan Gable either.... Just note the address, calculate, and move on to the final location for the find. Parking is available along the street. Bring your own pen for signing the log. Please use stealth at the final and replace it carefully in its hiding place so that it is not muggled.
FTF - Gold Medal - $1 coin- BoxmanCrew takes the Gold and gives us a chuckle!!! Wondered if anyone would encounter large objects at the cache. Who could have guessed it would be the FTF...
STF - Silver Medal - 25 cent coin- Grandville Gamers take the Silver!!
TTF - Bronze Medal - 1 cent coin- Hucks Hill earns the Bronze!>
