Geocache Description:

One in a series of cemetery caches along US Highway 14.

Also known as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Highway, US Highway 14 runs from the Minnesota border on the eastern side of South Dakota to Wall, SD, where it joins Interstate 90 to the border of Wyoming.

It is one of the original US highways of 1926 and currently has a length of 1,398 miles, but had a peak length of 1,429 miles.

Originally called the "Black and Yellow Trail". According to information from the Federal Highways Administration on their US 14 history page, the naming came from references to the Black Hills and Yellowstone National Park, two destinations of the trail. The originally-approved US-14 on November 11, 1926.

Highmore is the County Seat of Hyde County, South Dakota, and is located on the junction of US Highway 14 and SD Highway 47.

Its population is 714 as of July 2008, and shows a 16% decrease from the 2000 census.

The town was settled by German, Norwegian, Irish, English, and Czech peoples and was incorporated on June 30, 1882.

Three traditions give the name of the town, one says it was named for its elevation, another says it was named for a surveyor, and a third says a foreign worker looked at the rising slope and said “high more, high more”.
