EN: August Šenoa (1838. - 1881.) was a Croatian novelist, storyteller, poet, critic and writer in this genre.
Augustus's father, Alois Schönoa, German from the Czech Republic, moved to Zagreb in 1830 and worked as a bishop's pastry chef, and his mother Teresa Esq. Rabacs, Slovak from Budapest, died when he was 8 years old.
He went to high school in Zagreb and Pecs, and studied law in Prague and Zagreb. He translated from German, French, Czech and English.
The most influential and prolific writer of Croatian 19th century, and the true creator of the modern Croatian literature - suffice it to say that the first true Croatian novelist, author of an extensive corpus of novels, prose innovator and creator of the developed urban language standards - it is often stressed that his role as the man who has done more for the flexibility and expressiveness of contemporary Croatian than legions of dictionary-writers and consultants. Because of his greatness and importance that he had in Croatian literature, the period around his death is called “Šenoa time”.
August Senoa died as a result of pneumonia which he earned while he,as a city senator, cared for the people injured in the Great Earthquake in 1880.

Augustov otac, Alois Schönoa, Nijemac iz Češke, doselio je u Zagreb 1830. i radio je kao biskupski slastičar, a majka Terezija pl. Rabacs, Slovakinja iz Budimpešte, umrla je kad je imao 8 godina.
Pučku je školu i gimnaziju pohađao u Zagrebu i Pečuhu, a studirao je pravo u Pragu i Zagrebu. Prevodio je s njemačkoga, francuskoga, češkoga i engleskoga.
Najutjecajniji je i najplodniji hrvatski pisac 19. stoljeća, i istinski tvorac moderne hrvatske književnosti - dovoljno je reći da je prvi pravi hrvatski romanopisac, autor opsežnoga korpusa romana , inovator proze i tvorac razvijenoga urbanoga jezičnoga standarda - često je naglašavana Šenoina uloga kao jezikotvorca, čovjeka koji je više učinio za elastičnost i izražajnost suvremenoga hrvatskoga jezika od legije rječnikopisaca i purističkih savjetodavaca. Zbog njegove veličine i udjela kojeg je imao u hrvatskoj književnosti, razdoblje oko njegove smrti naziva se Šenoino doba.
August Šenoa umro je od posljedica upale pluća koju je zaradio dok je kao gradski senator skrbio za unesrećene u Velikom potresu 1880.
