Sandyfield School Site
1864 - 1947
A Short Walk Into A Great Area of Local History
This cache is in honor of all the past school teachers on this site who for 83 years taught local children and to the present teachers of today. We have 10 teachers in our family and are proud of them all.
The plaque marks the site of the former school of Sandyfield which stood until 1947.
This area was founded in 1760 when a road was built from Stony Point to Central Valley. Hikers know this old road as the Hasenclever Road. This is just one of the many small communities that disappeared to form Harriman State Park.
For a Little More History
Across from the school marker you will see an old dirt road. Follow it down to the lake for about 200 feet. On your left will be a very large maple tree. Between the tree and the lake is a large mound of dirt with a pipe sticking out of it about 4 feet. This is the roof of a root cellar and the door to it is in the lake, partially under water. Root cellars were used to store meat, fruits, and vegetables because the temperature three feet underground is about 54 degrees year round and acts as a refrigerator. The farm house must have been nearby.
Enjoy this step back in time!
