This Cache has been placed to commemorate and to celebrate the Russell family who were one of the last families to live in the Rock House Farm Cottage, which stood very near this spot.
Rock Farm House was built around the 1870’s and has been occupied by Vicar of St Marys, South Hylton and a series of managers of the ford paper mills before it was turned into a farm, which ceased to be in 1963-64. The paper mills were closed in 1971 by the current owners .
Since the farm was closed, the riverside and Claxheugh Rock is now a destination for many Sunday afternoon walker and a playground for many teenagers from Ford Estate and Pennywell.
It has become the chosen spot for my family to spread family member’s ashes as the place is very close to our hearts. (Not the spot where the cache is). This is also the proposed location for the new wear crossing. (The Iconic Bridge)
I have left some photo's in the cache to show what it looked like when it stood there. Please feel free to take a photo..
I would like to dedicate this cache to George, Stanley, John, Robert, Corra, Ann and Catherine my Auntie’s and Uncle’s who have had their ashes spread next to where the farm stood Also to Tommy my dad and Allen my only remaining Uncle.
