The Plantation of Ulster by the London Companies began in the Coleraine area. To protect their assets, strongholds called ‘bawns’ were constructed. One of these strong houses was built at Movanagher in the early 1600s by the Mercers' Company of London to protect their company village close by. The famous map by Raven from 1622 records it in close detail. Part of the farmyard here has a round tower still visible with its gunloops and windows. Recent extensive excavations found that no trace survives of the village of timber framed houses which stood in the pastures just to the south.
In what was a minor twist of fate, the rich and powerful Mercers' Company was unable to attract enough people to make the new settlement viable so they were forced to rely on mainly Irish tenants.“Father Kennedy's” Eel Weir is nearby but massive over-fishing through time has rendered it unprofitable with almost all of its main structures unmaintained and disappearing.
