Geocache Description:

The Summer Olympics begin on July 27, 2012, in London, England.  In their honor, we have created a series of caches to highlight the Olympic sporting disciplines. We will release a new cache as the first medal is awarded in each discipline.  In each cache, you will see a code for the Closing Ceremony cache.  The first 26 cachers who log all 26 sporting, Opening, and Closing Ceremony caches will win a special Olympic prize.

Women's boxing will make its debut this year with 3 different weight class events (Fly Weight, Light Weight and Middle Weight).  There are 36 women set to be the athletes in this inaugural competition.  There will also be 10 Men's boxing events with weight classes ranging from Light Fly Weight to Super Heavy Weight.  The men significantly outnumber the women with 250 male boxers registered.  There may be only one athlete in each weight class per country and Olympic boxers may not be older than 34.

Art depicts men fighting with bare hands as far back as the 2nd and 3rd millenium B.C.  The sport of boxing was part of the ancient Olympic games in the 7th Century B.C.  Gloves were not used then, instead fighters wrapped their hands in strips of leather for protection.   In 1867, a set of 12 rules was created called the Marquess of Queensbury Rules.  The intent of these rules has remained the general governing rules of the sport.   The first modern Olympic boxing matches started with the 1904 St. Louis Games.

Bouts consist of 3 rounds that last 3 minutes apiece for men and 4 rounds of 2 minutes for the women.  The bouts take place in a single elimination format in each weight class.  The winners of each semi-final competition will compete for the Gold and Silver medals.  The semi-final losers each receive a Bronze medal.  The boxing ring is a roped square where one athlete is assigned a red corner and the other boxer is in the blue corner.  Their clothing must match their corner color.  Points are scored for blows to the torso (above the waist) and head.  Should an athlete fall or be punched to the floor, they have until the referee counts to 10 to get up.  A referee may also decide if an anthlete is unfit to continue and end the bout at any time.  Players may be cautioned, warned, and disqualified for not listening to referee comments or performing unsportsmanlike behavior (including punches to body areas that should not be hit, using ropes to their advantage, tripping an opponent, ....)  Five judges sit just outside the ring and score points for valid hits.  A boxer may have an assistant "throw in the towel" to signify they admit defeat and wish to end the bout early.
