One of the joys of caching is traveling to sites we ordinarily wouldn't go, and experiences we otherwise wouldn't have. We enjoy the companionship and camaraderie as we explore new places with each other.

We are challenged to travel throughout our cities, counties, states and countries. We are asked to climb mountains, explore tunnels, dive under the sea, brave rapids, and even to soar to the international space station. We are asked to spell GEOCACHE, WOODSTOCK, and sometimes another cachers username. While each of these caches are in some way unique, those that log them each follow a similar path.

To log this challenge, however, you will each make a truly unique journey on this, your Voyage of the Self.

THE CHALLENGE

Your Challenge is to find caches with posted coordinates within the boundaries of different cities, and use the first letter from each city's name to spell your Geocaching Username. It doesn't matter what the name of the cache is, only its location. But, as always, there are rules...

THE RULES

  1. Caches found prior to the publication date of this cache do count, so you may already have the logging requirements.

  2. Cities are defined as either incorporated cities or a Census Designated Place (CDP).
    You can find a list of California's 483 cities by county here, and a link to more than 1,000 California CDP's by county here. But your list of qualifying cities/CDP's can be from any state or country. City nicknames or neighborhood names do not count. Here is the US Census' OnTheMap page, where you can look up place names and boundaries.

  3. You may use only one City/CDP per county. This travel requirement is considered when determining the D/T rating.

  4. Numeric characters are converted to alpha by substituting the corresponding letters of the alphabet. So 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, 5=E, 6=F, 7=G, 8=H, 9=I and 0=O. Non-alphanumeric characters are ignored. As there are very few cities or CDP's that begin with the letter 'X', you may substitute the letter 'K' in its place.

  5. You must have a minimum of five caches. If your username is shorter than five characters you must repeat your username in full until you have at least five caches. For example, if your username is "UB40", you must have eight caches in total.

  6. No more than 1/2 of your total caches may be Traditional caches.

LOGGING YOUR FIND

You may show your qualifying caches by making a public bookmark, posting a screen shot, or include them in your log. Be sure to include the City/State/County, the icon type, the cache name, GC code and date found in your post. I will verify all finds. Feel free to sign the log at any time but don't log a find until the requirements have been met.

One trick I have found in finding a city/CDP boundary line is to open up Google Maps and enter a city/CDP name. The map returned has a dotted boundary line surrounding the target location. If the address returned by Google Maps for the posted cache coordinates is within the city, or the green pointer on the map is within the boundary line it is good enough for me. Good luck!

NO LONGER ALLOWED: LOGGING A SECOND TIME

When I originally submitted this cache I wanted to disallow past finds.
As I posted in the reviewer notes:
"This is a journey starting today, not a reminiscence of days past. Besides, the challenge is to find caches in the field, not to find them in your archives."
While March 2012 rule changes require the inclusion of all finds, I am not prevented from allowing you to log this cache a second time if you qualify for it entirely with finds on or after the publish date.

So, if you publish a second list that meets all the logging requirements and is made up entirely of caches found after the publish date of 09/08/2012, you may log this cache a second time. The first person to do so may also claim a FTF.
