Acheron Road and Park take their name from the naval survey ship HM Acheron. Apart from their proximity to the coast neither the road nor park seems to have any link to their namesake.
HM Acheron was a 150ft wooden sloop commissioned for HM Navy in 1837. She was despatched to New Zealand in 1848 under the command of John Lort Stokes. Once in New Zealand she spent the next three years charting much of New Zealand’s coastline and harbours before cost cutting led to her being replaced by the HM Pandora in 1851. From New Zealand HM Acheron travelled to New South Wales where she continued surveying the coastline before being sold out of HM Navy’ service in 1855
Cache is a 750ml Camo’ed Sistema container located in the easily accessible Acheron Road Park and Reserve just of SH1 in Mana. Acheron Road Reserve is a quiet suburban play park with a large mown grassy area for games, a couple of pieces of children’s play equipment and a scrubby bush hillside
When placed the cache contained a log book and pen, a FTF pin, an Funki Tiki key ring, a McDonalds toy and a Te Papa eraser. We love treasure and seeing what is in others caches so please if you take something leave us something new.
There is a very well used path running through the park connecting the surrounding neighbourhood to the railway station so please be sure to leave the cache well hidden
