Kerroogarroo Fort is basically square in shape with bastions at each corner. Also known as Ballachurry, it was built at the time of the English Civil War. The Lord of Man at the time, James Stanley, was a Royalist, and was ordered by King Charles II to fortify the island for the Royalist cause. Even after Charles’ defeat, Stanley refused to surrender the island to the English parliament and offered refuge to Royalists, a stance which ultimately cost him his head! There has been some debate as to why the fort was constructed at this location. It is thought that, as much of the land to the south of the fort was what we know as curragh, that is, wet and boggy, to avoid this, a marching army would have had to pass within range of the fort.
