Geocache Description:

The cache is near the entrance to one of the many mineral mines in the area.
This one was a source of copper and silver, and in Victorian times, it became the source of water for the spa!

Not quite as easy to get to as you might first imagine, use your imagination and common sense to find a route to this cache.

The 17c Copper mine had been working in the area from the Mine woods down to the village a short distance away. Apparently the mine supplied the base metal for Scottish coinage ("baw-bees") of a few centuries ago.
The mine ceased working in 1807 despite plenty of ore vein still viable. In 1820 Sir Robert Abercromby, the local landowner who saw a commercial opportunity in the spa water, had the mine re-opened and removed all the rubbish left by mining. Having analysed the water from 4 springs, he constructed ducting to collect it.
There was formerly a large pile of debris in front of the mine-entrance, but that this was used to level up part of the grounds of the Allan Water Hotel.

There would have been many entrances and shafts to the mine but this is the main one left. The entrance is now sealed. You can still see pieces of Barytes from the copper veins in the spoil on the slopes below the mine.
