Geocache Description:

The Church of San Nicolo di Capodimonte

Construction of the Church of San Nicolo di Capodimonte started in the first half of the twelfth century, in order of the Congregation of Canons Regular of St. Rufus. It’s a typical Roman church with heavy walls and small windows. Inside you can still find some nice fresco’s and above the entrance there is and old inscription from the early days of the church. The stone blocks used for the church are likely to be transported by sea because they do not come from this area. Towards the middle of 1400 the town and the church were abandoned due to frequent pirate raids. After the raids stopped, the people returned to the town and to the church.

The church was renovated in the nineteentwenties when by Don Nicholas whitefish, who removed the plaster inside, bringing it back to show the origin of the stone again, as can be seen today. Lately, it has been the subject of further restoration work by the Region of Liguria, the Province of Genoa, Camogli and the City of St. Nicholas Group.

The church can only be reached by foot. It is twenty minutes walk on the road from San Rocco di Camogli to Punta Chiappa. Therefor it’s a nice stop on your trip to Punta Chiappa. You can sit in the shade of the large trees, overlooking the Liguriun sea. The view is great. Most people follow the route down to the sea, and miss the other nice side of the church altogether. To find the cache you will have to follow the path some twenty meters of the mountains, where you will see the church from the other side.

The cache

The cache is a Tupperware container with a blue lid. It contains a logsheet. The cache is hidden in one of the regular holes of the wall, behind some stones. Take care not to give away the hiding place and out the cache back the way you found (or better if it was visible from the outside).

Happy caching!
