This cache is located in Radnor Gardens, a lovely park set on the banks of the River Thames in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham. The cache is a 35mm film canister located close to the path that traverses the park just downhill from the road. There is no need to leave the path in order to retrieve the cache.
Alexander Pope's Grotto is the last remaining part of his villa, which he built in 1720 on the banks of the Thames at Twickenham. Demolished in 1808, the villa was replaced and the property became the subject of much redevelopment over the following 200 years. In 1996 St James's Independent School for boys acquired the estate, remaining for 14 years. In 2010, the building became Radnor House School, which now owns the grotto.
Radnor Gardens were formed out of a number of riverside properties but take their name from Radnor House, which, until its destruction by a bomb in September 1940, occupied some of the roadside frontage of the gardens.
The gardens were opened in 1903. The bowls club was formed in 1920 and the war memorial was erected the same year. Although the statue is facing south, it was sited to mark the end of a vista from the north-east where the Star and Garter Home for disabled soldiers and sailors stands on the crest of Richmond Hill.
