This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall start off with a few and hope to add to the series as I go along.
All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult - I would prefer you to find the caches - or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.
This is the fourth of the series and is probably one of my favourites - a beautiful little church in beautiful surroundings near the end of a dead-end road.
This church is dedicated to St. Meugan - a celtic saint from the 6th century, and it is thought that there has been some sort of structure here from at least 860AD although there has been numerous stages of redevelopment including the nave around 1300, the panelled ceilings from about 1600 and the porch was changed or built in 1732. There was also a more widespread modernization around 1865 where several projects were undertaken (too much to go into now).
Of particular interest today is the font which is possibly original from the 9th century, the fantastic oak tree trunk supports in the arcade, and the open wooden lantern tower in the welsh border style - a classic style of the area (Skenfrith is similar).
To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answer to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom.
So here we go.
What is the date on the weather vane on top of the tower? ABCD
The next step down the tower is the open wooden lantern portions, but how many vertical wooden supports (including the corners) are there on the two stages or levels. Take the top level number from the bottom level number to give your answer. (The top level value is given in the first part of the clue if you want to confirm you're counting the right bit). EF
Go round the back of the church and there is a tall obelisk-type of monument in a grey stone dedicated to John Hamilton (on the side facing the field). It is surrounded by a metal chain-fence, but how many of the taller spikes make up the fence? G
On the same side of the church there are some angled wall-support buttresses on the side of the actual building. How many are there? H
So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° DE.A(G-C)H W 002° (A+E+H)(B-A).E(F-E)(C/H)
(Where / = divide).
And that's it! Please walk to the cache though rather than drive - it really isn't far and there is nowhere to park closer.
The container is a half litre tub in a camoflage bag with a couple (only a couple though - I ran out) of small swaps.
First to Find by the 'Forest' team.
