Touring Lake Shawnee Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team RAGAR: It is with a sweet sadness that I archive this cache only because my good and long time late friend Eric (Grossy) was first to find this cache 4 years ago. I really miss him and typing this makes me tear up.

With only 26 finds on this multi after 4 years. This is a prime reflection of the decline of cachers who are interested in long hikes and with quality hides. The mindless micros and the quest for higher numbers, part of this game rule the day.

Stay tuned for this cache to return in a different format.

Take a Tour of
what could have been Lake Shawnee

A Three Stage Multi Cache in the Bedford Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks.

Welcome to Tinkers Creek Gorge.
Tinkers Creek is named after Captain Joseph Tinker, the principal boatsman for Moses Cleaveland’s Survey Crew, who died in the fall of 1797 in a boating accident on the return to New England. Tinkers creek is the largest tributary to the Cuyahoga River. Provinding 1/3 of the water that flows out to Lake Erie. Tinkers Creek flows through four of Ohio's Counties starting 15 miles southeast of here, near State Route 43 in the bush Knolls area of Kent, Ohio. Here it winds it's way for five miles through this gorge in the Bedford Reservation. In 1965 public officials made plans to construct a high level dam across what is now the Button Road Picnic Area. This dam would flood the gorge and create a large inland lake that would be named Lake Shawnee. This nintey-foot deep, one hundred and fifty-acre lake would have destroyed this beautiful primitive native forest. A five year study of this valley by Naturalist William F. Nimberger of the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District, which highlighted the unique blend of animal and plant species swayed public opinion on the issue. If not for his report and study this area would be used for boating, swimming and fishing. It's wonder and beauty forever hidden under the deep dark waters of Lake Shawnee. So come along and explore this Natural National Landmark while you hunt this cache and enjoy a tour of what could have been Lake Shawnee.
