Geocache Description:

Cache is now a nano. Washington Middle School used to be at the top of the hill. This is a small peanut jar wrapped in camo tape. Original contents are a roll of Cars stickers, police car, Instant Highway capsule, and a Washington Middle School T-shirt size medium. Please leave the logbook, cache note, and pencil in the cache. Permission granted by superintendent. Thanks Larry! Please do not hunt for it while school is in session since the elementary school is nearby.

The open lot near this cache used to be the site of Washington Middle School. I attended 5th and 6th grade there. While I was in the school district administration office, I got a little bit of history on it. It had classes in it from 1908-1999. "In the year 1908, a bond for $75,000 was approved for this new building,... While the school was being constructed, classes were held in various Maryville churches." Apparently back then, the district only had the elementary school and one building for middle and high school. "The basement and upper floors were used for the high school; and the first floor, for the fourth through eighth grades." "In 1921 an addition was built on the north of the main building, providing a gym, home economics department, commercial department, and an extra classroom." A tornado struck down near the cache almost 80 years ago. "On October 23, 1934, at 5p.m., when a tornado struck Maryville, the north and south parts of the Washington building were severely damaged. Practically all of the windows in the building were shattered, the doors were torn off their hinges, and the roof was partially blown off. Eugene Field [elementary school down the hill from cache] escaped with little damage. The second day after the tornado, classes were resumed in the various churches. Since the central part of the school building was not badly damaged, several classes returned to the building. It was the last of January, however, before all classes returned." The building was tore down in May 2003.
