Geocache Description:

A nice, easy hike along the Whitewater Canal

Starting in 1836, the Whitewater Canal ran 76 miles, from the Ohio River at Lawrenceburg to Hagerstown, Indiana.

The Whitewater Canal had the steepest drop of any canal in the United States, dropping  6.4 feet per mile.  By contrast, the Erie Canal dropped 1 foot per mile, and the Chesapeake and Ohio, 2.7 feet per mile. This steep drop was an engineering nightmare, and required 56 locks and 9 dams throughout the length of the canal.

In 1847, there was a massive flood in the Whitewater Valley, washing out a good portion of the locks and dams on the Southeastern end of the canal, and shortly thereafter came the end of the Whitewater Canal as a means of commerce.

In the early 2000's, the Whitewater Canal Historic Association realized what a contribution to history the canal was, and began plans to highlight the canal history and culture.  One of the projects was the Yellow Bank Trail, where we'll be hiking.

This hike will take us past the remnants of the Whitewater Canal, where signage will help us to learn about the history of the area. The trail itself is mostly crushed limestone and mostly level.  Hiking boots are not required, just some good sneakers.  Please bring some drinking water and join us as we hike and learn about the history of the Whitewater Canal!  We'll meet at the coords at 8:30 AM ready to hike!

Camping is available at Whitewater Valley Gateway Park. $24/night for water/electricity, $10/night for primitive (shower house and bathrooms available). Please call (765) 647-2541 to make reservations, or a mail-in form can be found through this link >> Camping Registration Form
