This cache is located in the Oxbow, a five square mile nature preserve and wetlands area near Lawrenceburg. The site is open to the public for hiking, birdwatching, fishing (with license) and other pursuits. Access only during daylight hours. You are looking for a regular-size ammo box, placed in a way as to protect it from the floodwaters which sometimes inundate the region. Please replace it EXACTLY as you find it....or it will be washed away!
This is my 10th cache hide, and I hope it will become my signature hide. The main course of the Great Miami River rises in Logan County, Ohio and runs approximately 160 miles....but it ends here, within a few hundred feet of this cache. The Great Miami widens at its mouth, forming a "delta" that flows to the right and left of Flannery Island (visible to the immediate east of the cache location) before emptying into the Ohio River (also visible downstream). Because of the low-lying nature of this area, it sometimes floods. During periods of high water, this cache will be extremely difficult to reach by land. And because the roads leading to the parking area are gravel (and toward the end, dirt) the going may be tough following heavy rain, when mud will make the use of a four-wheel drive vehicle a good idea. Having a boat will get you to within a hundred feet or so of the cache, when the water is at normal levels. I have considered all of this when rating the cache's difficulty....which in reality, will fluctuate from a 3/3 in the dry summer to every bit of a 5/5 in the winter and spring. I am very proud to have placed this cache in this beautiful, natural setting. Please respect the area, and I hope you'll take time to leave a detailed log after your find. I want to know all about your adventure!
