Tromsø Brass er et av Nord-Norges mest aktive amatør brass band. I år (2012) fyller bandet 25 år, noe som selvfølgelig må feires med en jubileumscache.
Tromsø Brass is one of Northern Norway's most active amateur brass bands. This year (2012), the band celebrates its 25th anniversary which of course must bemarked by an anniversary cache.
Cachen er gjemt nær et av byggene til Frelsesarmeen i Tromsø. Brasstradisjonen i Norge har sine røtter fra England, hvor brass og Frelsesarmeen er nært tilknyttet hverandre. Tromsø Brass øvde i mange år i forsamlingshuset til Frelsesarmeen (annet sted på tromsøya).
Tromsø Brass deltar hvert år på NM for brass i Bergen, som regel i 2. divisjon, men har også et par ganger klart å kvalifisere seg for 1. divisjon. Nivået i Norge er svært høyt, noe som blant annet illustreres ved at Norske brass band har vunnet Europamesterskapet flere ganger. Korpset gjør seg ellers bemerket i Tromsø med mange konserter og prosjekter gjennom året, hvor det blant annet er en viktig filosofi å forsterke interessen for å spille instrumenter blant byens unge. Således er den årlige underholdningskonkurransen viktig, hvor korpset som oftest lager et helhetlig konsept med høy showfaktor. Tromsø Brass er ikke å se direkte i gatene på 17. mai, men de fleste medlemmene støtter opp om byens skolekorps og marsjerer sammen med dem. The cache is hidden near one of the buildings of The Salvation Army in Tromsø. The brass band tradition in Norway has its roots from England, where the brass band movement and The Salvation Army are close. Tromsø Brass rehearsed for many years in the main building of the Salvation Army (another location on the Tromsø island).
Tromsø Brass competes in the National Championship in Bergen everey year, most often in the 2nd section but has also qualified for the 1st section a couple of times. The musical level is high, which is duly demonstrated by Norwegian bands winning the European championships from time to time. Tromsø Brass gives a number of concerts through the year, where an important thought is to strengthen the interest for playing musical instruments among the younger population. In this respect the annual show-contest in Troms is important, where the band often puts on an ellaborate show. Tromsø Brass is not seen in the streets on the Norwegian national day (the 17th of May), but most members support the schoolbands by joining in on this day.
