This cache has been archived.

mjmnz: The cache has gone missing and the night herons no longer nest there. As there is a new cycle bridge in place another cache would be more appropriate

Geocache Description:

A short drive out of Wanganui travelling North on State Highway 4 brings you to the settlement of Upokongaro. A chance to see the Nankeen Night Heron.

The Nankeen Night Heron is another in the birding series of caches in Wanganui . The Nankeen Night Heron, Nycticorax caledonicus, also commonly referred to as the Rufous Night Heron, is a medium-sized heron. It is found throughout much of Australia except the arid inland, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. A small colony has also established near Wanganui, New Zealand. The Nankeen Night Heron stands about 60 cm tall with a stooped appearance. It is not strictly nocturnal. It often feeds during the day, especially during wet weather. The bird is dependent on a diet of small fish, reptiles, insects and sometimes eggs. It can be seen around freshwater rivers, lakes, bulrushes, estuaries, harbours and in residential fishponds for goldfish. The species breeds in the period from September to April, building a nest platform out of sticks. It nests communally, near water. Two to five light green eggs are laid, with a 22-day incubation followed by a 42-49 day fledging period. There is a nesting pair in the little stream which leads into the Whanganui River. Last year they raised a chick which has seldom been seen in New Zealand. If you are a keen bird watcher take your spotting telescope and talk to the owner of the cafe and she will show you where they can be seen in her garden. Parking S39°52.155 E175 °06.861

There is plenty of parking outside the cafe and you will need to walk back towards Wanganui on the left of the road. The cache is on the bridge and there is a safe footpath fenced off from the road. No need to climb under or over the bridge or enter any gardens.

The cache is a cameo. Please replace carefully especially the log strip and see that it doesnt fall into the river. No room for TB and please bring your own pen or pencil. Watch chidren as road can be busy and dogs should be on a lead.
