One of my piano recital pieces I played as a kid was Frederic Chopin’s “Minute Waltz.” I had always thought this piece was named as such to be played within a minute. I’d play faster and faster, but could never finish the piece in a minute. Come to find out later, it is really MiNUTE (accent on second syllable) Waltz, meaning a small waltz, and is dedicated to the Countess Delfina Potocka, a student of the composer noted for her beauty, intellect and artistic gifts. Sometimes you will see the piece also noted as “A Madame la Countess Delphine Potocka” or “Valse in D Flat.” Chopin did not intend for this waltz to be played in one minute – a typical performance of it will last between one and a half and two and a half minutes. So NOW I find out! Another interesting tidbit is that Chopin got the inspiration for this waltz as he was watching a small dog chase its tail so he nicknamed the piece The Little Dog Waltz.
