Geocache Description:

This cache combines our two favorite hobbies – hiking and caching.  I hope you enjoy this hike as much as our family does.  Please hide the caches as good as or better than you found them.  If able, practice CITO.

READ ALL BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE GZ:  This series of caches is located up in DNR land behind the BIG yellow gate.  DNR officials encourage hiking and biking on DNR land.  This area is not State Park land only a land trust.  So no facilities are available here – Come prepared.  DO NOT block the gate when you park – this area has already been logged, but they have been quarrying rocks up the trail.  If you see equipment on the move, come back another day.  You must have a Discover Pass to park up here or face a possible citation.  You can buy an annual pass at authorized vendors, or one when you register you vehicle online.  The cost is $30.

There are 22 caches laid between the yellow gate and L1000 road to the east.  Our goal was not just to lay a power trail, but to show the beauty of this area.  It combines hiking with views like no other and cool forest trails in dappled sunlight under the canopy.  We love hiking up in this area and we wanted to share its magnificent beauty.

The terrain is full of inclines and declines so good hiking shoes are a must.  All the trails are good for mountain biking as well.  If you tackle all the caches, plan on being here 3-4 hours. Bring a lunch or at least water to stay hydrated.  Please don’t try this at night.  There are bears, cougars and coyotes that come out at night.  You may hear guns in the distance.  There is a target shooting area ½ mile to the east along Road L-1000.  DO NOT ATTEMPT #21 OR #22 IF YOU HEAR SHOOTING!  DRIVE OVER TO ROAD L1000 AND PARK AT THE TRAIL HEAD FOR #20 & 21 TO MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN.  There is a ‘No Shooting” sign posted for this logging road – just be aware.  You may also encounter motorcycle trail riders, like we did when planting the caches.

This is a loop power trail with ancillary off-shoot trails where more caches are hidden.  If you have maps on your GPS device, you will notice trails in the wooded area.  These are somewhat accurate, but definitely not spot on.  There are more trails than what you see on your maps.  We have added waypoint most of them. My GPS signal was OK under the canopy, so the caches’ coordinates should be pretty close.  None are too hard to find.  I figured if you made it up this far, it shouldn’t be an exercise in frustration, just a great hiking experience.  But the terrain is rated a bit higher.

Parking is off of L1400 or L1000 roads depending on which way you are coming up.  Waypoints are listed.  If you enter from road L1400, make sure you look for “Big Yellow Gate #2” cache.  If entering from road L1000, try hunting for “Red Ripper Red Ripper” as you come in.   If coming up here during the rainy season - be warned - you will be walking in very sloppy conditions on most of the trails. ****CONGRATS TO THE DYNAMIC DUO OF SCUBASONIC AND RAYVAN43 FOR THE SHARED FTFs****
