An easy find in a mini-park by the Dutcher Golf Course, the oldest public nine-hole golf course in the US. This site also marks the original location of the Pawling United Methodist Church, and Pawling's Bicentennial flag.
Some muggles, cache is near a busy intersection, and a restaurant across the street.
The cache does have a stubby pencil, but is too small for any swag.
This is the second in a series themed around the rich history of Pawling.
In 1872 John Bowditch Dutcher sojourned in Europe for two years. His travels took him to Scotland, specifically St. Andrews where he met "Young Tom Morris" and fell in love with the game of golf. When John Dutcher decided to build his "Dutcher House," world class hotel in the Village of Pawling completed in 1884, he created a three-hole course for his guests. The course was created from land originally used as pasture and was completed in 1885. Eighteenth century stone walls still add challenges to playing golf at the Dutcher Course today.
The New York and Harlem Railroad ran along the back of the golf course and John Dutcher built a wooden platform for the trains from New York City. Friends of John Dutcher could take a train from New York City right to the golf course. The course was expanded to nine holes and and opened to the public in 1890. In 1950 Helen Willets Dutcher, John Bowditch Dutcher's daughter-in-law deeded the land to the town with the stipulation that it remain a public golf course "in perpetuity."
Prior to the coming of the railroad in 1848, the village of Pawling was much smaller and closer to this location. This site makes the original location of the Pawling Methodist Episcopal Church. This church celebrated its bicentennial in 2009. The structure here was never completed owing to the passing of Colonel William Pearce, one of the five founding members. None the less, services were held here until 1854 when a new church was built closer to the railroad depot.
