Two "J" butterflies are listed as species of concern within Washington State, Johnson's Hairstreak and Juniper Hairstreak.
The Johnson's Hairstreak caterpillar host plant is the pine dwarf mistletoe found in old growth forests. Unfortunately for the butterfly, this mistletoe is considered a parasitic plant that causes damage to the trees. Both government forestry agencies and private logging companies practice eradication of the mistletoe.
Caterpillars secrete a substance that ants use and the ants protect the caterpillars from preditors. A partnership amongst the tiny creatures of the forest.
A large pull-off to park. An easy park and grab. A nice view too. Lots of hawks in the air at the time of placing. You are looking for a small waterproof match container. You'll want to bring a writing stick since I lost the one I had to put in the cache somewhere in my car. Please don't venture very far from the parking area. The nearby land is owned by a private hunting club.
***Congratulations to Mr. Gadget #2 for First to Find!***
