Geocache Description:

Located near the former site of St Catherine's Catholic Church, this cache is hidden at a small playground in the rural community of Yendon.

The cache contains a logbook, pen, and assorted small swappables. It can accommodate relatively long swappables, but no bigger than 30 x 30 mm wide. Please take care to return the cache securely to its hiding place.

Parking is available within a few metres of the cache, via a small local street (dirt road) that isn't shown on all maps.

When the new Geelong to Ballarat railway was opened in 1862, Buninyong railway station was established, where the railway crossed the Buninyong - Melbourne road, some 9km from Buninyong itself. A new township of Buninyong East grew around the station. Blacksmiths and wheelwrights were kept busy servicing the carters, who hauled goods and passengers between Buninyong and the station at Buninyong East, over the flanks of Mount Buninyong. A baker, butcher, bootmaker and draper opened businesses, and by 1873 the town had two hotels.

The name of the town changed from Buninyong East to Yendon in 1876.

St Catherine’s Catholic Church was built in 1865, in Pope St near the location of this cache. The street was already named Pope after a local family, having nothing to do with the leader of the Catholic church. St George's Church of England was built on the main road in 1884.

Yendon thrived in the early 20th century, with a school, police station, library, community hall and post office. Yendon fielded a team in the local football competition, and the tennis club was very popular.

The town's population began to decline after 1950. Both the churches were demolished in the mid 1960s. The station was removed in 1969 after passenger services between Geelong and Ballarat were stopped. The community hall accidentally burned down in 1971. The school enrolment dwindled to only six, and it was closed and sold off in 1993.

Today Yendon is a shadow of its former self, just a cluster of houses with no shops or services. The town and surrounding area is home to around 300 people, who enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle.
