Congratulations to our Pine neighbors Keep On Trekking for their very quick FTF! This is an all user friendly cache ( no need to be a premium member here ) two miles off highway 260. A high ground clearance vehicle can get you very close to the target, or you can hike the mostly level dirt road.
This cache is hidden just off General Crook's Trail ( the real trail, not the highway) as it travels across Black Mountain. From the cache site the very beautiful Black Mountain Canyon lays before you, with the spectacular West Clear Creek beyond that. This area of the canyon is known as the Devil's Windpipe and so is our cache. After hiking General Crook's Trail from here to 13 Mile Butte, I could appreciate the difficulty travelers faced in the late 1800's when it was used as a supply route between Fort Whipple in Prescott and Fort Apache near Show Low. I highly recommend hiking this very interesting section of Arizona's first historical trail.
