Holy Well 1 - Tobar Einne Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Burrentracker: Unfotunately, some muggle must have found and dissembled the cache as parts of if were found in different places. It is very difficult for me to maintain the cache on a regular basis it being in an island, so I decided to archive it.

Geocache Description:

An easy cache in a less visited area of Inisheer. You can get there by foot or on bike. With the multicache and another cache on the other side of the island, we recommend to either bring your own bike or hire one on the island.

This cache location leads you to the lesser known part of the island. Inisheer can be rounded on foot following the red dots painted on the stones on the shore. It is about 10 km around the island, and you'll see two caches including this one, the lighthouse from close up, the seal colony and the Plassey (shipwreck from the opening credits of "Father Ted") as well as the airport and the main beach.

The Tobar Einne Holy Well is well worth a visit as it is fairly unusual. It has basin in the middle surrounded by two walls which are open so people are wading through it for cures.

Tobar Einne or St. Enda's Holy Well is said to never run dry, and it was noted for its miracles.

St. Enda is an early saint whose name is closely associated with the Aran Islands. There are no reliable accurate records left as to when he might have lived, but it is believed that it was at the end of the 5th or beginning of the 6th centuries.

This cache is part of the Holy Well series which is open to everyone; if you know a holy well you would like to place a cache at then please contact Burrentracker through Geocaching.com. This is to keep track of the numbers of the holy wells and give you the general format for the cache page. If you currently have a published cache at a holy well that you would like to include in the series, get in contact with me, Burrentracker, and I can add it to the list.
