Washington Wildlife A-Z: K-Killer Whale
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The Killer Whale (Orcinus Orca) is a toothed whale. Males can reach 32' and weight up to 22,000 pounds, females 28' in length and 16,800 pounds. The average lifespan for a male is 30 years and 50 years for females. They have been known to live 50-60 years for males and 80-90 years for females.
Killer whales are highly social. Some live in matrilineal pods which are the most stable type for any animal group. The Washington State killer whales are part of the Southern Resident Population. There are three family groups of whales in Washington named J (based in the San Juan Islands), K (based in the Strait of Juan de Fuca) and L pod (based off the coast). The population currently is numbered in the 80s. This is down from a high of 97 in 1996.
The Southern Resident whales have their own dialect and distinct genetics. They breed only within their own population. They will gather into a "super pod" once a year near the San Juan Islands. Killer whales have a 17 month gestation period.
The causes of the decline are being studied. Some of the causes may be a reduction in prey populations, water pollutants, oil spills and watercraft disturbance.
The cache is near water, Rocky Ford Creek, fresh not saltwater, but it will have to do. You are looking for a Lock and Lock. It is back a ways from the creek in case of a rise in water level. Watch out for snakes, ticks and other creatures. I only saw a very large trout, various birds and a beaver today. Wildlife area parking available with a restroom above the creek. A Discover Pass is required, but there is room to park before the pass area.
I took the direct route down the hill and wove my way through the sagebrush. You can probably find an easier way if you want.
