This cache is near the memorial cross on the top of Beacon Hill. The memorial is to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee and the lighting of a beacon. Beacons have been lit here for other special occasions and in 1936 one was too close and damaged the memorial. In 2012 a new inscribed section of plinth was installed for QEII's Diamond Jubilee.
Beautiful views can be gained from a visit to here and the nearby Knott. It really is a great vista with the Pennines running north to Scotland, Blencathra, High Street, Shap Fells, Borrowdale hills, the Howgill Fells, round to Mallerstang, Nine Standards and into Yorkshire. The closer view over the vale of Orton is also very attractive, especially on a sunny day. Great limestone country to walk in.
