Geocache Description:

Orton Overlook: a series of 5 off-set caches on the gorgeous limestone scar above Orton.

Either come around from the Beacon via Hawthorn and Knott, or walk up from the Raisbeck-Orton road where easy parking can be found on the verge SE of Knott Lane. The Lane has the odd puddle in the dip but then you're onto the lime. On the way you pass Gamelands stone circle, one of the largest in Cumbria but sadly spoiled in previous times. The circle is oval shaped, 44.5 by 37.5 metres and built on a low bank. It is made primarily of large pink granite boulders and a kissing gate provides access for a look around.

At the end of the Lane is an old lime kiln, one of many in the area which were used to burn limestone to make quick lime for the fields, or to make mortar and whitewash for buildings. It is in a fragile state so don't go too near. Now the layers of limestone rise up in front. Pick any route up to the top of the prominent 'nose' of the ridge.

To find the cache:

  • Go to the co-ordinates where you will find a pair of cairns, a third lies further west, ignore this one.
  • Look at the view SSW.  On the ridge between Winfell Beacon and Grisedale Pike are two telecomms masts. (Visit on a clear day!)
  • Line up the W cairn of the pair with the E mast. This is the line (behind you) upon which lies the cache
  • Walk towards the summit, keeping the mast and cairn lined up. (watch where you're going!)
  • 'How far to go along this line?' is the final question.
  • It is between 100m and 150m away from the cairn.  If you want to be more precise, count how many GRANITE boulders make up the stone circle and add the answer to 100.  Granite only now!
  • If you haven't come past the circle, you'll just have to keep looking after getting 100m away from the cairn, sorry!

Keep them lined up and walk away towards the summit.

Written in the log are the instructions for finding Knott, take note before heading off.
They are also in the Hawthorn cache if you come that way.
