Geocache Description:

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast, Damian from Winter Foxes has created and updates a list of cachers who has found 10 or more little bridges and can be found here, if you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xx then name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to Damian’s list.

The Devizes Branch Line was a railway line from Holt Junction to Patney in Wiltshire, and named after Devizes, the largest town on the line. It was built by the Wiltshire, Somerset and Weymouth Railway, and was later bought up by the Great Western Railway. At one point the Devizes line provided a direct link from London to the West Country.

The Devizes Branch line and all of its stations closed in 1966 under British Rail's modernisation plans. The closure of the line can be accounted for by the awkward geography of the Devizes line and the falling amount of traffic since the building of a rival railway line from Chirton to Westbury which by-passed the steep gradients of the Devizes branch line.

Apart from a few remaining bridges and tunnels there is little evidence of the railway on the landscape today and after the closure of the line, all stations and halts were dismantled.

More information on the Devizes branch line can be found here.

The starting point for this little offset cache is at the bottom of a flight of steps leading up and over an old footbridge which crosses over the Devizes Branch Railway cutting and into St. John’s churchyard. This footbridge was originally constructed from railway sleepers and was affectionately known as Wooden Bridge. A name which has persisted even after the footbridge was rebuilt in steel and concrete.

You are now looking for a magnetic black 'nano' container with log-roll so please bring your own pen/pencil.

When arriving at the above location you will need to find a couple of pieces of information to locate the cache.

1. How many steps are there from bottom to top (bridge steps only) and let this equal A

2. Find some numbers on the lamp post nearest to the bottom of the steps and let the top three numbers equal BCD.

The cache can be found at N 51° (A+1).9(D+1)5 W 001° 59.(B+3)7(C-1)

You are on quite a well used town footpath so some stealth may well be needed while retrieving and replacing this cache.

Some limited roadside parking is available next to the Town Hall at N 51° 21.071 W 001° 59.685 or in Hillworth Road at N 51° 20.894 W 001° 59.704 and at various other positions along Hillworth Road.

Owing to the steep approach to this footbridge from one direction and a flight of steps from the other I am afraid that this cache is not suitable for wheels & Wheelchairs.

Good luck to you all.
