La Salette Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

onecrazycanadian: Hi,

The low health score on this cache has remained below 60 since our last contact. I see no sign of any maintenance being done to correct this and I have had no response from the owner since my last contact. Due to the lack of response I have no idea if any corrective action has been taken. Consequently I am archiving the cache at this time. Under directions from HQ, if the cache was archived for maintenance issues, it will not be unarchived. If you wish to replace it you will have to do so with a new listing.

Thanks

Geocache Description:

A reflection on times past

At the turn of the last century when the west began to be populated the early settlers of this area (of the North West Territories) wanted an education for their children so in 1902 the La Salette School District was formed.  The name was borrowed from the La Salette Fathers who came from France and built a church at the site of the present day Catholic Cemetery at Forget. Quite a number of the children from this district attended the school at the Catholic mission so there were not enough pupils to warrant building the school facility. The number of children in the area increased and in 1916 a school building was constructed.  In 1946 the school was shut down because of a lack of students and was re-opened again in 1950 with an enrolment of six students. The enrolment of the school grew to thirteen by 1955 when the district was taken over by the then Arcola School Unit.  In 1954 #13 Highway was re-built and came so close to the building it was necessary to move the school north fifty feet. In 1958 the school was closed for good and the building was moved to Handsworth where it sits today converted to an old garage and abandoned. Passing by this way today you would not know that this field at one time was where children came to learn and play.
