Years ago, Cooley Road used to dead-end at the driveway of the house across the street. Beyond and to the south was just BLM land. This was also in the days before the Bend Parkway and when the USFS Pine Nursery was in full swing. Cooley Rd used to be a wildlife "freeway" between the Sawyer Reach of the Deschutes River and the Pine Nursery. Not uncommon to come home late at night and find 20-30 does making short work of your landscaping. One day on the way to work, I noticed the earth movers showing up. When I drove home, the entire block bound by Cooley, Ranch Village S. (did not exist yet), Egypt (did not exist yet) and 18th (did not exist yet) had been cleared of all juniper and brush, making way for the two prominent local institutions that now occupy that space. This cache marks your entry into 'the zone', and is placed to honor good memories of kids playing out in the sticks, cross-country skiing 'at the end of the road', all the game that used to frequent this area, and teaching the kids to drive on the dirt roads out there. This can be a high traffic area, so please take care to park off Cooley.
