Geocache Description:

CITO event on the National Key Deer Refuge.

We are seeking volunteers to assist the Refuge with participation in a International Coastal Cleanup. The CITO event will be held in conjunction with this larger community clean up. We are organizing this so we will have clean beaches for the Birding Festival visitors.

Long Beach is a great place to see shorebirds, butterflies, Key deer and many other animals. There is a Hammock trail that runs parellel to the beach and it is quite shady. There are many limestone tidepools along the beach. Because of tides and currents, marine debris frequently washes up on Long Beach. This is a great place to practice Cache In Trash Out yearround! Details for the CITO event are below:

When? Saturday, September 15 from 9am to 12pm

Where? Big Pine Key, FL. about a 1/2 mile down Long Beach Road. We will gather at the Refuge Brown Gate (at coordinates). Parking is limited to the side of the road.

We will have a table set up to sign the CITO logbook and trade trackables. Prizes will be given for the most trash collected, the youngest participant, and the most unusual trash item collected.

We will provide trash bags and water, but please bring your own water bottle and any other supplies you will want.

Please Contact Kate Perry, Refuge Bio Tech and cache owner, for more information or to RSVP at (305)872-2239 ext 231 or email at Katherine_Perry@FWS.gov

I will be releasing bird related trackables in the spirit of the Florida Keys Birding and Wildlife Festival at this CITO event! For more information on the Festival, or to register visit http://keysbirdingfest.org/
