Hangmans Hill View Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

sgtzara: After retrieving the container from cep99 (thanks), I've decided to archive this one. Given that it wasn't found in over a year prior to 3/11/15 indicates that it wasn't an overly popular cache anyway. That, coupled with the fact I'm looking to move away from placing & maintaining nano/micro sized hides in favour of small/regular sized ones means it's time to say goodbye to this one.

Well done to all who took the time to find same during its time.

sgtzara.

Geocache Description:

A quick park and grab at a spot overlooking what is known in my family as 'Hangmans Hill' but the official name for same is 'Gallows Hill'.

History

As a youngster, I would have occasionally heard my family talking about 'Hangmans Hill'.  I had an idea it was on the east side of Newtownards but never really knew exactly where.

Fast forward to adulthood and alas the joys of the internet and getting your hands on a 1901 map of Newtownards which indicated exactly where it was.

I've since discovered that the proper name for this hill is 'Gallows Hill' and that it was situated, surprise surprise, on a hill between the now Bowtown Road and Old Shore Road.  There's no actual proper plaque or memorial at the hill, instead residential houses have been built on the site and the only real proper record of same exists in old maps / documents etc.

So, the cache has been placed in an area overlooking where 'Gallows Hill' was and perhaps when you've found the cache and are placing it back, you'll take a moment to reflect on the goings on that took place in this area in years gone by.  When I was placing the cache, I experienced what felt like someone touching my left shoulder, I'm not superstitious myself but I guess you never know what ghosts are floating about close to where they met their maker ..........

The Cache

The cache is a camo micro.  It should be a simple park and grab for most.  You do not have to enter any private property to retrieve the cache.
