Welcome to Coeur d'Alene Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Martin 5: # It has been 12 years/2 months since this cache published, with 760 Found logs posted for it over that time!! 😮 Despite this, we have regretfully decided to archive it!! The welcome sign was moved and modified from where this cache originally was placed and the two new locations of the hide haven't worked out so well!! At least not as well as we had hoped to keep it from being muggled!! This last location was great in the winter months and not so great once the pickleball courts began to get used more!! It was a good run!! Thank you to the 760 who logged a find on it!! #

Geocache Description:

Welcome to Coeur d'Alene
The City by the Lake

French-speaking fur traders named the lake in the mid 1800s. Legend says the traders believed the local Indians to be sharp traders and they called the lake Coeur d’Alene meaning “their hearts were sharp as an awl.”

In 1870 General William T. Sherman ordered a fort constructed on the lake and he gave it the name Fort Coeur d'Alene; hence the name of the city that grew around it. The name of the fort was later changed to Fort Sherman to honor the general.

Until the early 1890s, Coeur d’Alene served as the railroad/steamboat transfer point for transportation between the mines in the nearby Silver Valley to the smelters they fed in the eastern states. In the early 1900s, a major timber boom caused the population to increase 16-fold in a period of 10 years.
