Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in a neighborhood where I spent a lot of time as a youth. This area was one of the most active spots in town. The railroad depot was just around the corner, there were two Hotels that catered to the railroad employees as well as travelers, Emporia music, travelers and there was one of the best restaurants of the era next door(Blaylocks). It was a bustling busy area. The National Hotel & Restaurant & Cafe and the Baltimore Hotel, the Harvey House, east of the depot was demolished in 1937. The cache is in front of a building that started as the Coke bottling plant for the area. After they move to a new building dad bought the building and move his business in. Previously housed ½ block to the West just on the alley (Martin &Matson Plumbing). Matson Plumbing, Heating and Electric occupied the building until mom was diagnosed with cancer and dad closed the shop. I have so many memories of the area…………..helping in the shop, melting lead, unloading trucks, inventory, digging ditches, service calls. One summer dad bought me a new pellet gun and received approval for me to shoot pigeons from the train depot. What fun was that, all summer? There was no shortage of targets. Once I asked dad what happened to the pigeons after I shot them he told me to watch. There was an old man that followed me around the building and picked up all the fresh kills. Dad what does he want with the dead pigeons. He informed me that the pigeons are what the guy eats. Yuk was my response. So I had to bring several home that night for mom to make pigeon pot pie with them. What a great meal. There was not as much motor freight in this era so in the mornings dad would walk across the intersection to the East side of the railroad depot where the freight office was located. We would wait for the morning train, (steam locomotives) and pull a wagon out onto the platform area directly next to the main track and wait, wait. Then here would the great black steaming monster come in to the station. We would go to the freight car and unload his day’s freight on the cart and pull the cart back to the freight office. Somehow the freight made it to the shop, I don’t remember how this happened. We must have carried it or brought a truck over. There are so many more memories. This was such an active part of the community. Things have changed………………………..what a great life I had in this neighborhood. Thanks to the current store owner for allowing me to place a cache in front. Please respect the location and try to imagine what it was like.
