East Chesapeake Beach Road (Maryland Route 260)  uses the right-of-way from a once functioning railway from Baltimore and Washington to Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. Construction began in the late 1800s. Chesapeake Beach was designed as a resort town with beachfront hotels, a race track, casino, bathhouse, and beaches, as well as a 1600-foot entertainment boardwalk built over the water. On June 9, 1900, the first train arrived at Chesapeake Beach with a full load of passengers and much fanfare. In the early years, the fare for the round trip train ride from the District Line station to Chesapeake Beach was 50 cents. Express trains took about 60 minutes to make the trip; “locals” took about 90 minutes.

The Great Depression and the automobile brought an end to the railroad, and on April 15, 1935, the final train chugged away from the Chesapeake Beach station. Portions of Route 260 are built on that original rail bed. The base of the Lyons Creek trestle is still visible from the Route 260 exit ramp off of MD Route 4.
