Welcome to the Rock Chapel Earthcache. Please read logging requirements as set out below in order to log a find. Please sent me an email with the required information, and do not post in your log. Although, I cannot require you to post pictures, they would be much appreciated!
Rock Chapel is located in the Niagara Peninsula section of the Niagara Escarpment. Some of the rock formation that make up this part of the Escarpment are different from the formations found further north. This property also features other special features of the southern Escarpment including deeply incised river gorges, bedrock plains, and shale slopes.
Each rock layer is a time capsule, from hard limestone and dolomite made from the remains of ancient shelled animals, to soft shales and sandstones laid down at the mouth of an enormous river. Ripple marks, worm tunnels, and fossils tell the story of life 410-430 million years ago when this area lay submerged under a warm equatorial ocean.
At posted coordinates, you will come to a plaque. Please answer the following questions:
1. Where does the soil and glacial till that covers the bedrock plain, come from? What does it support?
2. In order, what six rock formations are visible from the caprock?
Please make your way down the stairs to Waypoint #1. On your way, you will encounter examples of the different rock formations. Please answer the following question when you arrive here.
3. Which formation AND rock type are you currently standing on?
Please make our way to Waypoint #2. Be careful as the stairs can be slippery in rain, and snow. Please answer the following question.
