Maaldrift
Deze cache ligt op de grens van buurtschap Maaldrift. Dit buurtschap maakt onderdeel uit van de gemeente Wassenaar. Het telt circa 140 inwoners, en je vind er onder meer een camping, een café, een militair complex, een tennisvereniging en het grootste bedrijventerrein van Wassenaar. Voorheen had dit buurtschap ook een vliegveld, dit vind je op de plek van de mystery-cache GC3MKOC naar verwijst. Hieronder een afbeelding van dit vliegveld uit 1935.
Café Maaldrift
Aan de andere kant van N44, de snelweg die dit buurtschap doorkruist zie je café Maaldrift. Al jarenlang gerund door Dick & Kitty Corel. Het café is daar echter niet begonnen. Met de komst van het militaire complex werd dit cafe, wat oorspronkelijk aan de andere kant van de N44 lag, verplaatst. Tegenwoordig is het de thuishaven van diverse clubs, en staan ze bekend om hun regelmatige jazzavonden. Ook hierbij een historische prent van het café aan de andere zijde dus, uit 1920.
N11 West
De omgeving van deze cache staat op het punt op radicaal te veranderen. Om de drukke N206 te ontlasten, is het plan om de N4 (Amsterdam – Den Haag) te verbinden met de N44 (Amsterdam – Wassenaar). Het plan is dan ook ontstaan om de bestaand N11 (Bodegraven – Leiden) door te trekken in westelijke richting, de N11 West. Deze komt tussen Leiden en grofweg de plaats van deze cache te liggen. Het voortbestaan van meerdere caches, waaronder deze word dus bedreigd! Meerdere malen hebben omwonenden en andere organisaties getracht deze verlening tegen te houden, maar zij zijn er enkel in geslaagd de boel te vertragen. De voorbereidingen zijn in volle gang, en het heeft er dan ook alle schijn van, dat deze verlening er tóch gaat komen. Als ‘stil verzet’ sluit deze co zich dan ook aan het actiecomité “N11 West Nee”, al is het maar voor het voortbestaan van mijn allereerste cache!
Gevaar!
Kijk bij deze cache alsjeblieft uit met kinderen. Een gewaarschuwd mens telt voor twee! Geocachen is sowieso een hobby waarbij dit advies eigenlijk altijd geldt. Een ongeluk zit in een klein hoekje. Bij deze cache is er sprake van een hoogteverschil, maar je hoeft geen acrobatische trucs uit te halen om de cache te bemachtigen. Wees ook niet bang dat je hem laat vallen, want daar kan je bijna geen schade bij aanrichten. Al met al een cache die best leuk kan zijn, maar waarbij behoedzaamheid in acht genomen dient te worden!
An ‘easy’variety to the phenomenom of a cache which involves climbing. With this cache it will be hard to maintain your stealth mode during rush hour. But don’t worry too much about that!
Maaldrift
This cache in on the borders of the hamlet called Maaldrift. This hamlet is part of the municipality of Wassenaar. It has about 140 inhabitants, and you can find a camping, a pub, a militairy complex, a tennisclub and the largest industrial area of Wassenaar within the hamlet. In the past, there used to be an airport. The existence of airport has been commerated by cache GC3MKOC, which is on the spot of this former airport. The following 1935 picture shows the airport.
Café Maaldrift
On the other side of the motorway N44, which devides this hamlet, you can find Café Maaldrift. It’s been runned by Dick & Kitty Corel for years. The pub didn’t start at that point however. With the arrival of the militairy complex the pub, which used to be on the opposite side of where it is now, was moved. Nowadays the pub is home to a number of clubs, and is known for its jazznights. We were able to find a picture, dated 1920, which displays the pub where it originally used to be.
N11 West
The surroundings of this cache are about to undergo a radical change. To avoid too much traffic on the N206 which goes thru Leiden, the plan is to connect the N4 motorway (Amsterdam – The Hague) with the N44 (Amsterdam – Wassenaar). This plan involves the expand the existing N11 (Bodegraven – Leiden) westwards. The connection with the N44 is planned between Leiden and roughly, this location. The existence of number of caches, including this one, is therefore under threat! On more then one moments the inhabitatants and other organizations have tried to prevent this expansion, but upto now, they were only able to slow things down. Preperations are fully underway, and it appears this expansion is about to be realized. As a ‘silent protest’ the owners of this cache have decided to join the comitee “N11 West Nee”, if only to ensure the survival of their very first cache!
Danger!
Please be carefull when taking children to this cache. As a Dutch proverb goes, a warned person, counts double. Geocachen is always a hobby in which caution is needed. There’s always an accident waiting to happen. At this cache there is a diffrence in height, but there’s no need to be an acrobat. Therefore do not attempt any ‘Cirque Du Soleil’tricks to get hold of this cache! There’s also no need to be afraid of dropping the cache, when dropped it can hardly cause any damage. Overall a cache that can be good fun, but where precaution is advised!
