Geocache Description:

This is in no way a park & grab. This is along a trail, along side a railroad. you don't have to cross the tracks to access this cache, but please take precaution. the trail is a remnant of an old branch line, described further below. I will tell you it is worth the time & effort. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CO-FTF NROTRUCK AND JAB824

This cache is located on a branch of the Monogahela Railroad which ran coal, steel, and passengers from 1903 until 1970, when passenger transit ended & Conrail bought the line for coal transport. This branch stemmed off the Ten Mile branch to Mather Collieries. Mather Mine & Collieries operated until 1964 & is the site of the 9th largest mining disaster, occurring in May 19th, 1928. The mine & rails are long gone, but nestled over Ten Mile creek still stands "most" of what the Mather "patch" kids call Big Bridge. A once popular children's spot, is still great for fishing. This is part of a continuing series celebrating the heart & soul of SouthWestern PA, Coal. There is a memorialized travel bug for you to take & enjoy the other caches in this series, as well as a fun First to find prize.
