Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
As the cache had disappeared we replaced it in april 2015. The coordinates have slightly changed. Athene Noctua in Sotira is a traditional cache within a chain of Athene Noctua caches we have set around the Paphos- Lemesos area. The caches have the intention to point you to abandonned villages and other interesting places in the area. The caches are named after the Scops Owl that lives around our house in Kouklia.
Sotira the hidden village only 20 km from Lemesos town. Until recently the road network was so bad that bus operators left it off their itinaries and taxi drivers charged extra for repairs. In the mid-1980s when the dirt road was asphalted things changed for Sotira. More recently the new motorway from Paphos to Lemesos was built right next to the village. Sotira is still invisible until you get there because the village is built in a steep valley that hides it from the naked eye. Overlooking the village from the north, the archaeological site comprises 50 dwellings of irregular shape. The Sotira Neolithic II site, dating to 4500-3900 BC, it is the island’s second in importance after Choirokoitia. There is a spacious square with a coffee shop where in the old days the people gathered to extract their olive oil and weigh in their carobs. The original stone oil press and other instruments are exhibited in the square. Source information: Sunjet Cyprus Airways summer 2012 issue.
The cache is hidden on a hill overlooking the village, very near a small goat farm with a very friendly owner and his family.
Additional note: Our geocaching friends Platonas 2 have kindly agreed to help and support with the maintenance of our cache in Sotira.
