Murder. It's the most heinous of crimes. No other crimes have as much impact on so many people. Google will tell you that many thousands of people are murdered each year. What kind of person is capable of taking another person's life.... or multiple lives?

Perhaps the most intriguing brand of murderers are the serial killers. They hone their craft with great precision and care, and it shows. Planning it, consumed with it, marking it with their own personal touch, and repeating it carefully, over and over again. Gaining deep satisfaction from it, these serial killers have done incredibly gruesome and unspeakable acts. Some quietly bury their victims close by, some eat their victims organs and body parts, some revisit their victims to check on them. Many of these serial killer are educated and respected members of society who easily blend in with the world around them.

Jeffrey Dahmer killed 17 young men, often dismembering their bodies, performing sexual acts on them, saving brains and body parts in his freezer and cannibalizing them. Dahmer got a taste for murder when he was just 18 years old. His official serial killing spree began 9 years later when he would coax home and kill 16 more people over a 4 year period.

Ted Bundy was one of the nation's most prolific serial killers. Bundy confessed to killing over 30 people, though the true number is probably much higher. Though educated and charming he was a true sociopath who raped and bludgeoned his victims.

Another famous serial murderer was John Wayne Gacy. He was also known as the Killer Clown because he dressed as a clown to entertain at children's parties and other events. John Wayne Gacy killed 33 teenage boys and young men, burying most of them in the crawl space below his house.

Dennis Rader terrorized a Kansas town for years as the BTK Killer (bind, torture, kill), even writing letters to police and media to taunt them. He killed 10 people before being caught in 2005. Radar's stoic and mechanical testimony was chilling to watch in the courtroom as he methodically detailed how he planned and executed his murders.

There are many other serial killers that have left their mark on history. David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz (arrested in '77 for 6 murders) , Gary Ridgeway (convicted of 48 murders, confessed to more) , Aileen Wuornos (executed in 02 for 7 murders), and the Hillside Stranger (10 murders) to name just a few. You probably know others as well. Most make quite a buzz in the media. Movies have been made about them, books and songs written, and there is a public fascination with these rare and disturbed creatures.
