Geocache Description:

This cache series is a celebration of the USA's victories in the 2012 London Olympics. Each cache will be named after gold medal winning athletes/teams or noteworthy accomplishments.

The fourth cache in the series celebrates Missy Franklin's gold winning and American record performance in the Women's 100m Backstroke.
The backstroke, also sometimes called the back crawl or the upside-down freestyle,is one of the four swimming styles regulated by FINA, and the only regulated style swum on the back. This has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. The backstroke start is the only start from the water. The swimmer faces the wall and grabs part of the start block or the wall with his hands. The backstroke has a similar speed to butterfly. Race times for the butterfly are superior to those for the backstroke mostly because the former allows a racing start from poolside and the latter does not. In races beyond 200 meters, backstroke would actually be the faster of the two, though it mainly depends on the stamina of the swimmer. The maximum swimming speed for backstroke is around 1.89 meter per second.

2012 was the first olympics for Missy Franklin and the 17 year did not dissapoint. On the first day of the swimming competition at the Olympics, Franklin won a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay with Jessica Hardy, Lia Neal, and Allison Schmitt, with the team finishing behind Australia and the Netherlands. In her first individual event on the third day of the swimming competition, the 100-meter backstroke, Franklin won the gold medal with a time of 58.33, beating her own national record. Incredibly, her win in the 100m backstroke came less than fifteen minutes after completing the 200-meter freestyle semifinals, where she qualified for the final.

Congratulations to Missy Franklin, Olympic champion!

The cache is a square plastic jar, approximately 7" x 7" x 9". . This is not a simple park and grab, but it shouldn't be too difficult either. We did not see any poison ivy in the area around the cache, but as always please look out just in case. Parking is available in a parking lot the East. There may be muggles around that area during the day so use stealth when necessary. Please remember to rehide the cache as good or better than you find it.
