Geocache Description:

The Sandberg Trail is found along The Old Ridge Route Road...but it's also referred to as the Golden Eagle Trail...enter the Old Ridge Route from Hwy 138...(The Old Ridge Route Rd has a locked gate just north of Templin Hwy and another locked gate just south of the old Sandberg Inn site). The trail ascends from The Old Ridge Route Road to the ridgeline (about 2 miles) where the trail intersects with Forest Road 7N23.

You are looking for a medium/large cammo'd plastic tube (Clorox Wipes container). The Liebre Mountains are part of the San Gabriel Mountain Range. You'll be hiking/biking through woodlands of manzanita, pines, oaks, maples, grassland meadows, and chaparral. A National Forest Service Adventure Pass is required in this area...25 bucks at any sporting goods store and it's good for a year. You'll start your hike at about 4,200 ft. where the resort town of Sandberg once was. The trailhead isn't marked but the geocaching maps show the trails very clearly. The Sandberg Trail ascends to the right from the Old Ridge Route Rd...a short distance up the trail will bring you to a junction...the easier way up is found to the right....a steep shortcut is found to the left...a 700 foot gain in 0.6 miles...but still part of the Sandberg Trail...lots of shade either way up. Mountain bikers also use this trail...and you'll find campgrounds along the ridgeline (Forest Road 7N23)...and a bunch of geocaches along the ridgeline roads & trails. 360 degree panoramic views of mountains, lakes, canyons, desert, wildlife, wildflowers...the scenery is spectacular at any time of year...and the Liebre Mountain summit is at nearly 5,800 ft. Pack a lunch, a camera or phone, bring some friends, pack plenty of water and remember to CITO!
