Geocache Description:

The drive from Adelaide to Mt Gambier takes about 4.5 hours. Beautiful scenery and countryside make it a very pleasurable and interesting roadtrip but we thought, why not make it even more fun by incorporating a geocache hunt into the journey! So...Pull over into the rest stop for a well deserved stretch of the legs, bathroom visit...and geocache hunt! Enjoy!

Monarto is a region and formerly proposed city in South Australia. In year 1970 the Labor Government who ruled during that period (Don Dunstan led the party) was concerned that Adelaide would become overpopulated, after a rapidly increase in population growth caused by high rates of birth and immigration that had occur in 1960s. An expanding of the city would also threaten the attractive wine producing areas that could be found in the south and north of the city. To solve the problem of increasing population, the government proposed that another city should be built, about 80 km east of Adelaide. They named it Monarto and it was decided that it would work as a kind of supporting city, where people from Adelaide could move and work. However, some people where suspicious about the project and especially the reasons behind it. Many thought that the real reason behind this project was political interest and that the state government only wanted to improve its electoral prospects in Murray Bridge which is located close to Monarto. Eventually, after years of dispute, the entire Monarto City project was discontinued and the area that was to become to centre of this new city was instead turned into the Monarto Zoo.
