Shongweni Dam
Shongweni Dam and Game Reserve is 30 minutes from Durban and offers water sports, fishing, game drives and camping - a piece of true Africa.
From awe inspiring cliffs and waterfalls, to lush forests, this reserve is home to buffalo, giraffe, waterbuck, wildebeest, warthog, and a variety of birds.
Accommodation is available in the reserve in tented camps situated at the water's edge. Campsites are also available and there are three picnic areas.
The Shongweni Dam wall is an engineering marvel with the largest "Hydroplus Fuse Gate" system in the world. For the historian, the original water works are preserved as a national monument, and some important archeological sites have identified some of the earliest signs of cultivation in the world! Shongweni is a National Heritage Site.
There is a bird list of over 200 species, a self-guided nature trail and three beautiful picnic sites. Game viewing drives, horse rides and canoes are available by prior arrangement. Arrange these at the entrance gate.
